Mr. Joseph Fraser (1926 - 2014)
Lifetime AchievementMr. Joseph Fraser took a hands-on approach to helping develop the Island into what it is today. He also was instrumental in founding the Heritage Classic Foundation which greatly helped in saving our professional golf tournament here on the Island.
Mr. Charles Fraser (1929 - 2002)
Lifetime AchievementMr. Charles Fraser was an incredibly gifted real estate developer whose vision helped transform Hilton Head Island from a sparsely populated sea island into a world-class resort and golf destination. Included in his long list of accomplishments is the development of both Sea Pines and Harbour Town Golf Links.
Mr. Charles Price (1925 - 1994)
Golf Historian and AuthorMr. Charles Price was appointed by the Fraser brothers to market Sea Pines and the Heritage Golf Tournament. He was a freelance writer for Sports Illustrated and Golf Digest, as well as a founder of Golf Magazine.
Mr. Kevin King
Male CompetitorMr. Kevin King has dominated amateur golf in the Low Country for two and a half decades. Among his accomplishments are nine Hilton Head Amateur titles, one Hilton Head Open Title, and two South Carolina State Mid-Am Titles.
Mr. James Ferree
Instructor and Male CompetitorMr. James Ferree has won tournaments on the PGA Tour and the PGA Champions Tour. He has been inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame, Carolina’s Golf Hall of Fame, Tri-State PGA Hall of Fame, UNC Hall of Fame, and is a recipient of the Ben Hogan award.
Mr. Tim Moss
Instructor and Male CompetitorMr. Tim Moss is one of the original 40 PGA Master Professionals. One of the Low Country’s most esteemed instructors- he was the swing coach and golf mentor to several Hollywood elite during the 1999 filming of The Legend of Bagger Vance.
Mr. Michael Harmon
Instructor and Male CompetitorMr. Michael Harmon has over 20 PGA victories, sits on the advisory board of Polo/Ralph Lauren, and serves his community greatly. When asked about his success he humbly says, “My biggest honor in golf and how I have been able to give back to our game the most is through my almost thirty year endeavor/effort at Secession.”
Mr. Cary Corbitt
Lifetime AchievementMr. Cary Corbitt quite possibly has done more to establish and further golf in our Low Country than any other individual. Mr. Corbitt’s most treasured accomplishments are not his tenure or any affiliations, but what he has been able to give back to the community through his illustrious career.
Mrs. Karen Feree
Female CompetitorMrs. Karen Ferree’s golf career spans six decades of competition and victories, starting in 1967 with the Title of Carolinas Junior Champion and continuing through her WSCGA Senior Champion in 2011. She played a key role in the development of the “Palmetto Cup Matches,” co-founded the Hilton Head Junior Golf Association, and is involved in numerous charitable causes in our area.
Gary Duren
2023 Male CompetitorMr. Duren amassed quite a playing resume' prior to calling Hilton Head his home. Several Minnesota State Championships as an amateur. Once becoming a professional he won the Austin City Open three times, a two time winner on the J.C. Goose Space Coast Tour, p[ayed in the 1976 Walt Disney Classic and the 1986 MCI Classic. Since arriving on Hilton Head Mr. Duren was Head Professional, promoted to Director of Golf, at the Port Royal Golf Club for sixteen years. While there he started the Port Royal Junior Golf Program and Clubs for Kids program. Gary is also the only three time winner of the Hilton Head Open Championship.
Billy Sampson
2022 Instructor and CompetitorMr. Sampson started his golf profession as Assistant Golf Professional at the famed Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines Resort. He moved on to the Old Tabby Golf Links as assistant Professional and soon became Director of Golf from 1996-2019. Billy is currently Director of Instruction at Old Tabby on Spring Island. One of Billy's most cherished endeavors is his annual golf marathon enabling him to raise over $1,000,000 for Folds of Honor. He says, "doing this event allows me the opportunity to give back to the 1% that give us freedom."
Chip Pellerin
2023 Instructor and CompetitorChip is a lifetime active member of the PGA of America and is Director of Instruction at the Country Club of Hilton Head. Chip started his career in golf assisting with the Golf Digest School of Instruction. He has been Head Golf Professional, Director of Golf and General Manager at Palmetto Hall Club of Hilton Head and at Palmetto Dunes Resort, winning several awards. Mr. Pellerin recently became certified for the PGA Hope Program. part of the PGA Reach Program. Certified to work with military veterans and active duty service members to enhance their physical, mental and social well-being through golf.
John Farrell
2021 PGA Professional and Male CompetitorMr. John Farrell is Director of Golf at the famed Harbour Town Golf Links in the Sea Pines Resort and manages all aspects of the 54-hole semi-private resort operation. John was awarded the 2009 Carolina's PGA Section Plaque and the 2007 "Tommy Cuthbert Professional of the Year" award. Mr. Farrell has been the American Golf Merchandiser's Platinum Award Winner seventeen consecutive years as "Top 100 Golf Shops in America". John is a member of Knights of Columbus, the Beaufort County Big Sister-Big Brother program, and an usher at the Holy Family Catholic Church on Hilton Head Island.
Doug Weaver
2019 Instructor and Former Touring ProfessionalMr. Doug Weaver, a former PGA Tour player, has coached and instructed hundreds of golfers on Hilton Head Island over the past 23 years - the past 13 years serving as Palmetto Dunes' highly respected Director of Golf Instruction. He has been faithful for 25 years to the HHIPGA Junior Golf Programs. Mr. Weaver has been the golf coach to all three area high schools and hosted a local TV golf show for 10 years. Doug has competed in two US Opens and has been named Golf Magazine's Top Teacher in the region. Other awards include the PGA President's Council on Growing the Game for every year from 2005 to 2010. Doug offers a one hour Golf Clinic free to all every Monday at 4:00 at the Palmetto Dunes Jones course practice range.
Linda Hartough
Golf Landscape ArtistMrs. Linda Hartough is widely considered to be the foremost golf landscape artist in the world. She is the only artist ever commissioned by both the USGA and the championship committee of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews to paint their respective opens. Linda approaches each course in two ways: as a scene the golfer would appreciate and as a piece of fine art. She takes hundreds of pictures of any scene, different light, different angles, even the plants. Her attention to detail is evidenced in the incredible quality of her paintings.
Edward “Skip” Malek
Instructor & Male CompetitorMr. Skip Malek began his career in golf at the prestigious Oakmont Country Club in 1971 as Assistant Professional under the tutelage of Head Professional Lew Worsham. Upon his arrival in the Low Country in 1980, Skip became the first Head Professional at Bear Creek Golf Club. Skip is a two time winner of the famed Horton-Smith Award recognizing those that have knowledge and love for the history of the game of golf.
Clyde B. Johnston
Lifetime Achievement, Golf ArchitectMr. Johnston is President of Clyde Johnston Designs, Inc. Golf Course Design & Land Planning. Since opening in 1987, the firm has completed the design of forty 18-hole courses, one 9-hole addition as well as renovation plans for approximately eighty other golf courses. Mr. Johnston has donated his time and expertise developing the short course and practice area at the First Tee location.
Mr. Ron Cerrudo
Instructor & Male CompetitorMr. Cerrudo played on the PGA Tour for twelve years, amassing four professional victories. He came to Hilton Head Island toward the end of his playing career in 1979 and became one of the most sought after instructors in this part of the country. Mr. Cerrudo started his instruction at the Shipyard Golf Club and later moved to Port Royal Golf Facility. He currently holds the Head Instructor position at Daniel Island Golf Club in Charleston.
Ron has said his biggest accomplishment in his golfing career is the joy he gets instructing and helping our wounded warriors learn the game of golf.
Mr. Donald O’Quinn
Lifetime Achievement, Golf ArchitectMr O’Quinn held the Sea Pines titles of Vice President of maintenance, Vice President of Sports, and Vice President of Golf; he was instrumental in the design of Harbour Town Golf Links, along with Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus. He also worked with Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and George Cobb on other course designs. Charles Frasier once said, “Without Donald O’Quinn’s input and guidance Harbour Town Golf Links and Sea Pines would not exist today as we know it.”
Mark King
Lifetime Achievement and EntrepreneurMr. Mark King started his career as a Class “A” golf professional on Hilton Head Island with his responsibilities being the three Port Royal courses, Wexford Golf Club, Indigo Run Golf Club, and the Shipyard Golf Club. In 1986, Mark founded the Club Group, LTD., a golf club development and management company, followed by his founding of the Club Group Reality Co., in 1991 and the Lighthouse Retailers, LTD. in 1994. Mark is past President of the Hilton Head Island Rotary Club and serves on a number of community and property boards.
Pete Dye
Renowned Golf ArchitectMr. Pete Dye was an American Golf Course Designer who left his stamp all over Hilton Head Island and the South Carolina Lowcountry, with the design of the following courses: Colleton River – Dye Course, Hampton Hall, Harbour Town Golf Links, Heron Point, Kiawah Island Ocean Course, Long Cove Club, and Robber’s Row Course in Port Royal. Mr. Dye was also involved in the initial layout of the Secession Golf Club. Harbour Town Golf Links features a Pete Dye Museum in their clubhouse, which is where Mr. Dye is said to have wanted it
Heidi Wright-Tennyson
Coach and InstructorMrs. Heidi Wright- Tennyson is a PGA Class “A” Golf Professional who served as Director of Golf at Moss Creek Golf Club for 24 years until accepting the Head Golf Professional position at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa, California. She was awarded the Carolina PGA Player Development Award in 2013. She was also awarded the honor of “Golf Professional of the Year” for the Hilton Head Island Chapter of the Carolinas PGA in 2000 and 2008. Heidi also served as Golf Coach for the girl’s golf team at Hilton Head High School.
